Gopal Dynasty

Lord Krishna, having an intention to kill Danasur came to Nepal Valley along with his cow herder friend’s. After the completion of the task he intended to do he returned, but his cow herder friends beholding the epitome of beauty did not return.
One day, a cow herder saw that his cow used to give milk at the bank of Bagmati River.  His inquisitiveness led him to investigate and therefore, dug the ground where cow gave milk. A jyoti linga appeared, due to the intense light coming from the linga, the cow herder kicked the bucket. It is the same jyoti linga we worship today as Pashupatinath in Pashupati temple of Nepal, temple’s name was also derived from this incident as a “pashu” led in its discovery.

Ne Muni declared the son of cow herder; whose father died in front of the jyoti linga as the first king of Nepal, his name was "Bhuktaman". There were altogether eight Gopal kings; the last king was "Yakshya Gupta". The Gopal Dynasty lasted for 521 years in Nepal.

In the time frame of 521 years, they had territory ranging from Chitlang in the West to Gosaikunda in North, Dudh Koshi in East to Trisuli in West.
The Capital of Gopal Dynasty was "Mata Tirtha". In the time of Ne Muni, one cow herder being distressed by the death of his mother went to the jungle near his house on the 15th day of baisakh there he  offered a bowl of boiled rice to her in the tank were water got collected from the mountain. A vivid image of his mother’s face and hand appeared in the tank and offering was accepted by the hand which was of his mother.

For this reason, Ne Muni named the place as "Mata Tirtha", and the present day people resort there on that date, 15th Baisakh to offer bowls of boiled rice to their deceased mothers.
The legacy of Gopal Dynasty is important even today as cow is the national animal of Nepal. Since then, agriculture and animal husbandry has been the main occupation of Nepalese people. The custom of celebrating mother's day traced its origin from Gopal Dynasty. The temple of almighty Pashupatinath under whose blessings, the kings of Nepal reigned, traced its origin from Gopal dynasty. Nepal got its name in that very dynasty. The administration system and laws and regulation started to be formulated.

Hence, the study of Gopal Dynasty is must for understanding social, political and economic condition of Nepal today.
